I got my first period pretty early. I think I was 11 from memory. It was before a lot of my friends, same with getting my boobs, which also burst onto the scene in primary school, to my extreme embarrassment!
I was an early bloomer, you could say.
From then on, my periods and health in general were pretty stock standard average.
I’d get the typical PMS symptoms, but nothing extreme. I guess I was one of the lucky ones.
Then, around the age of 26 something changed. My normal periods became unbearable. Painful, heavy, long and draining.
One night the pain got so bad I ended up in the emergency room, unable to stand up. I was sure it had to be something more sinister than just a period. And I’m glad I trusted my instincts, because after a string of appointments with specialists, the problem was located.
I had fibroids. Big giant cysts, making themselves at home in my uterus.
It was shocking to find out these growths had been forming in my body but also a relief to have an answer.
My gynaecologist suggested the best step would be to remove them. He was right and the change in my periods was almost immediate. I was back to my old self.
A few years later I got pregnant with my first son and then my second…and then my third. I was practically pregnant or breastfeeding for four years.
Then a few months after getting my period back after having Billy, the same tell tale signs began.
Extreme pain. Heavy bleeding. Long drawn out periods. Then extreme lethargy. Hell on earth.
I went back to my G.P with a self diagnosis, sure it was fibroids again. But an internal ultrasound (aren’t they delightful?) found nothing.
Nothing to explain what I was going through.
I just couldn’t take that.
So I started digging. Because that’s what I do. And I found some interesting info regarding hormones, post birth.
I’d always known they go thrown through the ringer, I mean how couldn’t they? But what I didn’t know was just how long they could take to settle back down to ‘normal’.
I came across this fabulous article written by someone who specialises in hormones and someone who has treated me in the past.
So I trusted it. And it made sense.
And after following the advise, it worked.
I now take a range of supplements every day. I try my hardest to eat well and incorporate exercise into my life.
The reason I’m sharing this is because if you or someone you know is going through the same thing, this could help.
