All the small things

‘Mummy, you are my best mummy. I really like you and love you all day long.’

When I hear my three-year-old’s declaration of love, I drop what I’m doing, race over to her with a ridiculously love drunk look on my face, and envelop her in my arms.

As I feel her tiny arms tighten around me, the last few unsettled nights are instantly forgotten. Her moodiness of late, a distant memory. Those words were just what I needed to hear to snap me out of my own mood and stop me from rushing around like a lunatic before work and daycare.

Her words spoken with heart came as a gentle reminder for me to slow down and take in the beauty around me.

It’s been just two weeks since we’ve returned to work / daycare after the Christmas break and I am already beginning to feel like life is spiraling out of control.

Miss Three has been having night terrors causing everyone’s sleep to be a little broken, while Smiley, our 15-month-old, is going through a strong willed phase.

It is so easy to become caught up in the stress and monotony of life if you don’t give yourself time to step back and appreciate all that you have and the everyday beauty that surrounds you, the simple things in life – the small things.

And so, I’ve been focusing on appreciating the small things in my life which really aren’t small at all.

My two golden haired girls their curls untamed, a dimpled smile, a chubby hand in mind, a cuddle and kiss between sisters, dancing in pyjamas, high-pitched squealing, raspberries on tummies, giggling, lots of giggling, endless questions, an obsession with the moon, made up stories and songs, Smiley finding her feet, a hand on mine at story time, kisses for no reason, declarations of love, a meal eaten without tears, Smiley calling her sister’s name, an email from Dave when I’m feeling blue, a hug without words, mutual understanding, endless and unquestionable love and support, family.

These small things scattered through our day leave impressions on our heart if we let them. They are the makings of memories and what life is all about.

Are you taking the time to appreciate the small (and big) things in your life?
